Email Deliverability Benchmarks

Email deliverability measures what percentage of your outbound emails actually reach the inbox (vs. spam folder or bouncing entirely). It's the foundational metric of any outbound email program — without strong deliverability, no amount of personalization or great copy will generate results. Deliverability is increasingly challenging as Google and Microsoft tighten inbox filters.

Summary

Healthy cold email deliverability means inbox placement rates above 85%, bounce rates below 3%, and spam complaint rates below 0.1%. Below these thresholds, your domain reputation is at risk.

What Affects This Metric

  • Domain age and reputation — new domains require a warm-up period before sending volume
  • SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configuration — missing authentication records guarantee spam folder delivery
  • Sending volume relative to domain history — sudden volume spikes trigger spam filters
  • List hygiene — high bounce rates from invalid emails rapidly destroy domain reputation
  • Spam complaint rate — recipients marking your email as spam is the fastest deliverability killer
  • Content signals — spam trigger words, too many images, or too many links can trigger content-based filters

How to Improve Your Numbers

  • Set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records on every sending domain — these are table stakes, not optional
  • Use a dedicated warm-up network (Instantly or Smartlead) to build domain reputation before real campaigns
  • Verify email lists with ZeroBounce or NeverBounce before sending — target below 2% bounce rate
  • Rotate across multiple sending domains (one per 50–75 emails/day) to distribute volume risk
  • Monitor Google Postmaster Tools for domain reputation and spam complaint rates daily
  • Remove unengaged contacts (no opens in 90 days) from sending rotation to maintain list engagement rates

🚩 Red Flags

  • Bounce rates above 5% — your list verification process is broken or you're using unverified purchased lists
  • Spam complaint rate above 0.1% — stop sending immediately and investigate the root cause
  • Reply rates suddenly dropping to near zero despite good creative — check if your domain has been blacklisted
  • All emails going to 'Promotions' tab rather than primary inbox — engagement signals are weak; list quality needs improvement
