Waterfall Enrichment

Waterfall enrichment is a data strategy where you cascade through multiple data providers in sequence to fill contact information — try provider A for an email, if not found try provider B, then C — maximizing coverage without paying for all providers on every record. Clay popularized this approach. Common waterfall: Apollo → Clearbit → Hunter → LinkedIn. The result: higher contact coverage at lower cost than using a single premium provider.

Real-World Example

For example, a waterfall enrichment for 1,000 contacts might find valid emails for 85% of records by cascading through 4 providers, versus 65% from a single provider — at a fraction of the cost of buying all 1,000 contacts from a single source.
