On-page optimization tool that tells you exactly how to structure content to rank.
Surfer SEO is a useful tool that the industry has slightly oversold. The Content Editor is genuinely helpful for ensuring on-page coverage of key terms and topics — it catches obvious gaps that human writers miss. But the score it produces has become a cargo cult: teams optimize for the number instead of the user.
In our experience, the biggest ranking factors are topical authority (do you own the topic cluster?), backlinks, and search intent alignment — none of which Surfer directly helps with. Hitting a 78/100 score on a thin article rarely beats a 65/100 score on genuinely comprehensive content.
Where we do recommend Surfer: for training new content writers who don't have SEO intuition yet, and for making sure client content doesn't miss obvious on-page basics. At $89/month for a starter plan, it earns its keep if you're producing 4+ articles/month. Just don't let the score become the goal.
Content teams producing high volumes of SEO content who need a systematic quality check. Not a substitute for strong topical authority strategy.
