Earned Media Value (EMV)

Earned media value estimates the monetary equivalent of organic coverage — press mentions, social shares, influencer posts — using a cost-per-equivalent-impression benchmark against paid media rates. EMV is a PR and influencer metric that attempts to quantify the value of unpaid exposure. The criticism: EMV calculations vary wildly depending on the benchmark rate used, and organic impressions rarely convert at the same rate as targeted paid impressions. Use it for directional benchmarking, not budget decisions.

Real-World Example

For example, if a tech publication with 500,000 monthly readers writes a feature about your product and CPM on similar paid placements is $50, the EMV of that article is approximately $25,000 — though actual conversion value depends heavily on the article quality and audience match.

At Cactus

We report EMV for clients running PR and influencer programs — with the caveat that it's a relative benchmark, not a substitute for tracking actual pipeline from earned media.
